Spring Cleaning, Elevated: Thoughtful Design for a More Organized Home

As spring arrives and homeowners begin refreshing their spaces for the season ahead, organization naturally moves to the forefront. While baskets, bins, and seasonal clean-outs can make a difference, true organization starts with the design of the home itself.

At VanderHorn Architects, thoughtful planning is woven into every project, creating homes that balance elegance with everyday functionality. Whether through spacious walk-in pantries, tailored closet systems, concealed storage, dedicated mudrooms, or beautifully designed laundry spaces, intentional architecture can make daily living feel calmer, cleaner, and more efficient.

Let’s explore a few spaces that demonstrate how thoughtful design can seamlessly support everyday functionality.

First, let’s look at a few mudrooms.

More than just transitional spaces, mudrooms are often some of the hardest-working rooms in a home, providing smart storage solutions that help keep busy households organized.

Pictured above is the new mudroom at our Classic Georgian Revived project. Before the renovation, the home’s mudroom served primarily as a simple pass-through connecting the backyard, garage, and guest suite above. With the addition of custom cabinetry, updated lighting, heating and air conditioning, and plumbing, the space was transformed into a highly functional hub for dog crating, plant potting, and everyday storage.

In our Contemporary Shingle project, the mudroom incorporates nautical influences that reflect the home’s waterfront location. The barrel-shaped ceiling, complete with curved white oak beams and beadboard infill, takes inspiration from the underside of a wooden boat, while the central built-in cubbies crafted from white oak create a rich focal point within the room.

To keep the space from feeling too dark, we paired painted doors and shiplap walls with complementary white oak casing for a balanced and inviting aesthetic.

Let’s take a peek at a few laundry rooms in our homes.

More than simply utilitarian spaces, well-designed laundry rooms help streamline daily routines while keeping cleaning supplies, linens, and household essentials neatly organized and easily accessible. Pictured above is the laundry room in our Classical Revival home. It features sturdy countertops, ample storage, a farm sink, and colorful concrete tiles to liven up the space.

Next, let’s talk about pantries.

Pantries are essential to creating kitchens that feel both organized and highly functional. From spacious walk-in pantries designed for everyday storage to elegant serving pantries tailored for entertaining, these spaces keep the main kitchen clutter-free while supporting efficiency behind the scenes.

The pantry spaces in VHA homes are thoughtfully integrated into the flow of the home, balancing beauty and practicality through custom cabinetry, smart storage solutions, and seamless architectural detailing.

Many of our clients request serving pantries located just off the kitchen or dining room to make entertaining more effortless. Shown above is the serving pantry and home bar in our Inspired Greek Revival project, featuring polished mesh-panel upper cabinets, herringbone white oak floors, semi-gloss finishes, and a slab backsplash that continues seamlessly into the countertop. Designed for both everyday living and entertaining, this space blends elegance with functionality.

Another favorite is the serving pantry and bar area in our Classical Revival project, where sophistication and practicality come together seamlessly.

The glossy deep blue lacquer in this serving pantry creates a striking contrast to the soft whites and warm grays of the adjacent dining room, highlighting its glass display cabinets, plaster walls, and detailed moldings. Marble countertops, an enameled fireclay farmhouse sink, integrated refrigeration, an ice maker, and concealed trash bins bring both beauty and functionality to the space.

Moving onto another type of pantry, walk-in kitchen pantries promote a more efficient and organized home by creating plentiful storage space that allows the main kitchen to remain clean, functional, and uncluttered.

At our Greenwich Normandy project, the walk-in kitchen pantry provides ample dedicated storage for dry goods, beverages, serving pieces, and everyday essentials.

Last, but not least – closets.

Luxury closets are far more than storage spaces. They are carefully designed extensions of the home that bring order, ease, and refinement to daily routines. With features such as custom cabinetry, tailored shelving, integrated lighting, dedicated dressing areas, and beautiful material selections, a well-designed closet should feel both highly functional and distinctly personal.

One recent design trend is the addition of a closet island, offering a dedicated space for styling outfits, packing suitcases, and displaying accessories. Pictured above, the closet in our Contemporary Shingle project features a glass-topped island with shallow drawers designed to beautifully organize and showcase jewelry.

Our Classic Georgian Revived project offers another impressive example of a closet designed for peak organization. By expanding the footprint and raising the ceiling, this space allows for maximum storage through custom cabinetry, while hidden LED strip lighting behind the glass doors transforms everyday shelving into an elegant display.

From spacious walk-in closets to well-appointed mudrooms and serving pantries, these spaces elevate organization into an experience, proving that the most functional areas of a home can also be among its most beautiful, well designed, and enjoyable to use.
